The Nokia Optical Network Professional Certification provides you with a foundational understanding of optical network design, network elements, and the network management system. It familiarizes you with Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM), Engineering and Planning Tool (EPT), and Network Functions Manager for Transport (NFM-T), for Nokia 1830 PSS-based Networks.
Becoming a Nokia Optical Network Professional demonstrates expertise and establishes important baseline optical networking skills. These baseline skills ensure that customers, partners, and employees can easily work together to efficiently develop and sustain an effective solution.
The certification and training covers the basic principles and practices of optical networking and introduces the network equipment, interworking principles, node functionalities, main transport technologies, and basic concepts related to protection, restoration, control, and management.
There are no formal prerequisites for the Nokia Optical Network Professional Certification, but participants should be familiar with TCP/IP network layers, basic optical network components such as lasers and optical fibers. Participants should also have basic knowledge of optical network transmission concepts including signal and noise.
Becoming certified could not be more straightforward as it only requires passing the Nokia Optical Network Foundations (4A0-205) written exam.
Candidates can also take advantage of the recommended Nokia Optical Networking Fundamentals course or the Nokia Optical Networking Fundamentals course materials to prepare for the exam. Candidates will gain important practical experience through understanding several use cases and by designing and building a simple optical network using the Nokia 1830 EPT and NFM-T on an 1830 PSS-based network.

Given the limited open testing sites and to ensure your certifications remain active, we are extending the termination dates for those of you who have an active certification with a termination date from March 1st, 2020 to February 27th, 2021. If your certification is set to terminate within this timeframe, you will automatically have your certification termination date extended to February 28th, 2021.
For example, if you were certified on January 21st, 2017:
- Your certification expired on January 21st, 2020 (three years from the date you were originally certified on)
- Your original certification termination date is July 21st, 2020 (six months following the expiry date)
- Your revised certification termination date is February 28th, 2021
Certifications that terminated before March 1st, 2020 or after February 27th, 2021 are not eligible for an extension.

If you had a lab exam that was postponed or canceled as a result of COVID-19, the Nokia Learning Services team will contact you to make new arrangements. No additional costs will be incurred to reschedule your lab exam.

Q: Which Nokia certifications does the extension apply to?
A: The extension applies to any certification within the following Nokia certification programs:

Q: What is the effective date for certification extensions?
A: Certifications that terminate on any date from March 1st, 2020 to February 27th, 2021 will automatically be extended to February 28th, 2021.
Q: What is the difference between my certification expiry date and the termination date?
A: It’s important to keep the following dates in mind when recertifying for any Nokia certification:
Certification date: The day your certification was awarded.
Certification expiry date: The day three years from when your certification was awarded. Note – If you pass a recertification requirement, the expiration and termination dates for your certifications will be reset to the date that you wrote the exam.
Certification termination date: The day your certification terminates if you do not meet the recertification requirements within six months after your expiry date.
We recommend that you review your certification termination date immediately in the Student Portal.
Q: My certification terminated on February 15th, 2020. Does this mean my certification termination date will be extended to February 28th, 2021?
A: No, only certifications that terminate from March 1st, 2020 to February 27th, 2021 will automatically be extended to February 28th, 2021.

We Are Simplifying How You Schedule Exams

Nokia is simplifying its written exam scheduling and management services. Nokia uses the Pearson VUE test delivery service to provide our candidates with global access to schedule and complete our written exams supporting the Optical Network Certification (ONC) program. As of July 17, 2019, candidates will be able to schedule written exams via the Student Portal. You will no longer need two separate accounts to manage your written exam scheduling and to view your certification status. You will be able to use your Student Portal account to complete all of your written exam and certification tracking activities from a single tool, all connected to your Nokia Extranet Portal Login profile.
The ONC Student Portal provides all of the following functionality:
- View the current status of all of your certifications
- Quickly see a summary of remaining requirements to achieve additional certifications
- Confirm your recertification requirements to keep your hard earned certifications active
- View completed written exams
- Schedule or reschedule upcoming written exams

The ONC Program expands with release 2.0! Two new certifications with a focus on network design and optical services join the ONC portfolio. Through the Nokia Optical Network Design Expert certification, you will develop expert level knowledge, best practices and practical skills required to design optimized and resilient Nokia 1830 PSS based WDM networks. And, with the Nokia Optical Network Services Expert certification will learn the technologies, skills and best practices required to configure, manage and deploy differentiated services on a Nokia optical based network.

Introducing the Nokia Optical Network Certification Program

The Nokia Optical Network Certification (ONC) program is designed to provide industry professionals with the training and skills needed to design, manage, and troubleshoot optical networks based on the Nokia 1830 PSS and NFM-T. The first certification track planned for the program is the ONC-Architect track. Other certification tracks will be added in the future. The focus of ONC-Architect is on advanced-level topics in the areas of network design, management, and troubleshooting. The certification consists of four courses, four written exams, and one practical lab exam. All four courses have a strong focus on hands-on lab training to ensure participants gain working-level knowledge in each subject area.
