Nokia Optical Transport for Mobile Services

Course Overview

This course is designed for network engineers, IT personnel, and network planning personnel who need to learn the principles and best practices for optical transport of traffic from current and future (5G) cellular networks, from the base stations to the mobile core network. After introducing cellular networks and discussing the challenges of the Radio Access Network (RAN), the course presents the typical use cases for optical fronthaul, midhaul and backhaul. Optical technologies and architectures based on the 1830 Versatile WDM Module (VWM) are proposed for fronthaul to meet 5G requirements, and the Time-sensitive Packet Switch (TPS) is introduced as well. The course includes multiple hands-on lab exercises where students can practice fronthaul configuration as well as troubleshooting in both Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) scenarios.

  • Explain the main functionalities and characteristics of 5G
  • Identify the mobile components of RANs in the different network generations
  • Describe the architecture of the distributed RAN (D-RAN), centralized RAN (C-RAN), and Cloud RAN (Cloud-RAN)
  • Define fronthaul, midhaul, backhaul and anyhaul
  • Describe the protocols supported by fronthaul architectures, such as Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) and Open Base Station Architecture Initiative (OBSAI)
  • Identify the requirements for fronthaul architectures
  • Identify the specific requirements for 5G
  • Classify VWM components such as: translation line unit (TLU), photonic management unit (PMU), optical protection switch (OPS), site monitoring module (SMM), and optical supervisory unit (OSU)
  • Describe VWM use cases
  • Describe the passive, semi-passive, and active architectures
  • Describe OPS-based fronthaul solution
  • Check Performance Metrics (PMs) and alarms for CWDM and DWDM channels under various error scenarios
  • Identify where the traffic is flowing in an OPS ring, and switch it
  • Check PMs/alarms when a CWDM/DWDM channel is detecting frame/clock errors
