BELL LABS AND DRESDEN’S TECHNISCHE UNIVERSITÄT TO COLLABORATE ON ADVANCING DEVELOPMENT OF 5G NETWORKS
Bell Labs has become a research partner of the Technische Universität of Dresden’s 5G Lab in Germany.
Under a collaboration agreement, the two organizations will develop and test technologies that will help to define the capability of 5G mobile networks in meeting the massive connectivity demands of the future, with the high-performance required by end-users.
Alcatel-Lucent´s Bell Labs and TU Dresden, via its 5G Lab Germany, are collaborating to develop key technologies that will define the future of 5G networks. Of the four research tracks at the 5G Lab Germany – Wireless and Networks, Tactile Internet Applications, Silicon Systems and Mobile Edge Cloud - Alcatel-Lucent will initially focus effort on the Wireless & Networks track. Alcatel-Lucent’s research cooperation will focus in two areas: Definition of a new air interface, and the use of multiple device-to-radio connections.
As a research partner, Bell Labs will fund the joint research and will then incorporate findings into its ongoing Network 2020 development work.
This announcement highlights Alcatel-Lucent’s competitive ability to collaborate with leading research institutions on the development of 5G.
RESEARCH ON SMARTPHONE USERS’ INTERACTION WITH SERVICE PROVIDERS REVEALS GROWING POPULARITY OF SELF-HELP CUSTOMER SERVICE TOOLS
A comprehensive study by Alcatel-Lucent of 5,500 smartphone users in Brazil, Japan, the UK and the US has found that consumers are increasingly happy to avoid dealing with the helpdesk of service providers, and instead use app-based self-service tools to resolve many common service issues.
The research looked at a range of consumer trends in mobile communications, including how smartphone users prefer to interact with large companies, use of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Voice over Wi-Fi, wearable devices, future communications including connected vehicles, and customer experience management.
THE LATEST INNOVATIONS FROM ALCATEL-LUCENT
Alcatel-Lucent introduces G.fast home networking device to accelerate deployment of ultra-broadband connectivity
Alcatel-Lucent has introduced a ‘gateway’ device for residential and business use that will allow operators to accelerate the deployment of G.fast-based ultra-broadband access to meet the ever-growing demand for faster data speeds in homes and the workplace.
Alcatel-Lucent’s G.fast residential gateway (7368 ISAM CPE) will extend fiber-like data speeds into the home through a simple, plug-and-play device that uses the G.fast standard to bring more than 750megabits-per-second of broadband speed to consumers over existing telephone lines - almost 30 times the global average.
Alcatel-Lucent and Sequans to power IoT prototyping platform for Orange
Alcatel-Lucent and Sequans Communications are to collaborate on enabling key technologies for the ‘Internet of Things’ by providing the ‘4G Kit for IoT’, a principal building block in the new Internet of Things prototyping platform launched by communications operator Orange to stimulate interest by the IoT market in 4G connectivity. The 4G Kit for IoTwill be powered by Sequans’ LTE chipset and technical implementation by Bell Labs.
A limited series of 200 kits will be tested with innovation communities working on IoT projects as part of an effort to foster the creation of wirelessly connected objects, based on 4G and Orange’s network, to deliver novel services. Developers will be able to use the kit to make use of cloud services and mobility to design a new generation of IoT devices, taking full advantage of scalable resources such as remote computing, storage, and advanced services.
