Community and sustainability

We are engaged in several community and sustainability programs across India in the field of education, capability and capacity building, environmental protection as well as supporting communities and underprivileged. In 2013, we supported local communities in Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai through over 50 different initiatives covering blood donation camps, food, supplies, clothes and other essential collection campaigns for underprivileged through NGO engagements.

In 2014, Nokia took a step further to deepen its commitment to society by supporting Save the Children in building resilience of children and their communities in India through Disaster Risk Reduction and Social Protection with Technological Innovation. The 3.5 year program aims to help rural communities mitigate impact of natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes on lives and livelihoods, strengthen disaster preparedness and access to various social protection schemes especially child sensitive social protection schemes. The program is being rolled out across 5 states – Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Delhi – covering 350 villages and touching lives of close to 11,00,000 community members including 3,50,000 children. The program will facilitate last mile connectivity, bringing villages/urban settlements with vulnerable communities closer to government institutions for disaster management at national, state and district levels for better implementation of disaster management policies and planning.

The other aspect of this program is the unique technology innovation from Nokia - a LTE-based Network-in-a-box (NIB) solution for Public Safety Mobile Broadband. It is a system in which the main mobile network functions are integrated into a small ‘box’ and can be deployed during disaster in case the main operator run-network is impacted, to enable communication between early respondents and task forces. The solution, which will be deployed in 6 pilot villages in 2016, will act as a standalone communication system complete with its radio, core, access and application layers. Additionally, information and communication technology will also be provided to help track the distribution of entitlements under various social protection schemes to the communities in these villages.
