2014-02-27 | NSN and O2 win GSMA Global Mobile Award #MWC14
Nokia Solutions and Networks and O2 (Telefónica UK) were recognized for their performance and innovation in automation, winning the top prize at the GSMA Global Mobile Awards 2014. The joint entry in the “Best Mobile Infrastructure” category was for the deployment of iSON Automation for Operations. The winners were announced at the GSMA award ceremony on February 25.

Mobily (Etihad Etisalat Company), a leading telecom operator in Saudi Arabia, has taken another major initiative* to accelerate the expansion and modernization of its 4G LTE, 3G and 2G networks between 2014 and 2016. To this effect, Khalid Al-Kaf, CEO of Mobily, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rajeev Suri, CEO of Nokia Solutions and Networks at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. As per the MoU, NSN will facilitate an additional long term export credit of 280 mn USD with Finnvera, Finnish Export Credit (FEC), and lenders Credit Agricole, Deutsche Bank and Societe Generale. This credit will help Mobily purchase advanced solutions and services from the world’s specialist in mobile broadband, NSN.

Nokia Solutions and Networks has been awarded a contract by Vodafone to modernize and expand its existing radio network. Under the five-year deal, NSN will supply its Single RAN advanced platform, operations support systems and related services. In conjunction with this agreement, Vodafone has also selected NSN to provide a common Subscriber Data Management (SDM) solution.

Global TD-LTE Initiative recognizes company’s drive for innovation
Nokia Solutions and Networks’ Liquid Applications has won a Global TD-LTE Initiative (GTI) Award in the “Innovative Solutions” category. Liquid Applications from NSN fundamentally changes the role of base stations in the mobile network by turning them into local hubs of service creation and delivery. This allows the integration of processing and storage capabilities with IT cloud servers so that real-time network data such as radio conditions, subscriber location, direction of travel and much more can be utilized for improved services and applications. The GTI Innovation Award is further recognition of NSN’s continuous drive for superior mobile broadband experience and commitment to both the TDD and FDD variants of LTE.

- Innovation will allow operators to improve LTE mobile broadband speed and boost TD-LTE coverage by 50-100%

Nokia Solutions and Networks today announced its successful demonstration of the world’s first TDD-FDD carrier aggregation together with Korean operators, Korea Telecom (KT) and SK Telecom (SKT). The demonstration was carried out separately with the two operators, using NSN’s Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station. This breakthrough is a boon for operators and LTE mobile broadband subscribers as it will enable significantly improved network capacity, high-capacity coverage and speed.

EE, the UK’s largest mobile operator, has selected Nokia Solutions and Networks to support the continued expansion of its 4G LTE network. NSN is also modernising EE’s 2G network to improve performance and reduce power consumption.

Nokia Solutions and Networks is extending its award-winning Flexi Zone architecture*, making it the most versatile small cell solution able to cover all deployment scenarios. A Flexi Zone controller application can be added to existing macro-cellular base stations to run a large number of nearby small cells. Flexi Zone’s cluster approach can now be used for indoor deployments. In addition, Flexi Zone controller supports the integration of NSN Liquid Applications to deliver locally-relevant, fast services directly from small cell base station clusters.

Wider Flexi Zone base station range for almost unlimited capacity and coverage
Nokia Solutions and Networks is creating new ways to deploy and integrate LTE and Wi-Fi to boost Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) capacity and coverage, indoors and outdoors. A comprehensive expansion of the Flexi Zone small cells range adds TD-LTE and extra frequency bands, as well as incorporating Wi-Fi. A new indoor Flexi Zone pico base station, the industry’s smallest, is the only indoor small cell with the same capacity and running the same software as a macro base station. Pico base stations for indoor coverage provide easier connection options and higher capacity than a distributed antenna system (DAS)* can offer.

- LTE Stadium Optimization service cuts interference by 30 – 60%, with corresponding quality and throughput gains for large events
- New software features enable fast steering and smooth handovers from WCDMA to LTE for smart devices
NSN is launching new software that is capable of activating the hidden performance of networks and thus doubling the uplink capacity in existing LTE networks, without any additional hardware investments. Centralized RAN links together multiple base stations and turns the interference into useful traffic, especially in dense traffic areas with a large number of smart devices.
In addition, the company is adding two new software features to its Liquid Radio Software Suite to allow operators to steer LTE-capable smart devices onto 4G more quickly, freeing up WCDMA capacity. These features ensure all subscribers get the fastest speed and best application performance on mobile broadband networks.
